Getting Rid Of Bathroom Books And Other Clutter

By Serena Price

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the clutter in your living space, especially when you have lived there for a long period of time. Over the years, we all accumulate unnecessary items. Tacky souvenirs, stacks of bathroom books, or My Little Pony collections can take up all kinds of space that could be used for other purposes. Here are some tips for reducing the clutter in your home, and reducing your chances of becoming a hoarder.

1. Throw stuff away! This may be difficult if you are sentimentally attached to your stuff, but it is the quickest and most definitive way to get rid of things. Be honest with yourself about your possessions. Chances are, some of your things are broken beyond repair, or so old that no one will ever use them again. Identify these things, and thrown them away. You will be glad you did.

2. Make use of storage space. Whether you use you basement, attic, or closets, or rent out a storage locker, this can be a very effective method of clearing out your home. Take inventory of your things, and mark down the ones you have not used or touched in three months. Chances are, all of those things can go into storage, clearing out the spaces they currently occupy.

3. Have a garage sale. You may call it a stoop sale, or a yard sale, depending on where you live. Regardless, selling you unwanted items for a modest price can be a good way to clear them out, and to meet your neighbors as well. Selling things feels less wasteful than throwing them away, and other people may be able to find new functions for your old stuff.

4. Give things away to a charity. Many thrift stores and resale shops not only sell used items at reasonable prices, but also give their profits, or at least a portion of them, to good causes. Most commonly, clothing is donated to these shops or charity drives, but other things may also be useful. If you have excess toys, appliances, dishes, or blankets, they may be great things to donate.

5. Give to a friend or relative. If you have a child and do not plan to have any more, chances are you have a lot of things you will no longer need. You may have cribs, bassinets, baby clothes, toddler clothes, and any number of other things you will never use again. Ask around to friends and relatives who are considering having children or who already have them.

6. Use organizational tools. Buy shelving units and large plastic containers. If you need to, make written lists detailing the things you want to keep and the things you want to give away. Being organized and methodical makes the clutter reducing process much less painful.

You will be very happy if you find some time to dedicate to reducing clutter in your living space. Clearing away the ceramic figurines, bathroom books, and other items that are taking unnecessary space. Think about using the tips provided above to help you do so.
