Award Winning Authors Produce Amazing Works

By Marcia Marks

Reading is a wonderful way to spend some free time. Many people now use their wireless tablet to download the latest books to read when they are travelling. It is always a good idea to look around for works by award winning authors. These can be in a huge variety of fields, from travel and politics to mystery and fiction.

The Pulitzer prize is awarded annually and in several categories. Recipients of the prize often find that all their work is now under scrutiny and they get a tremendous amount of publicity. Even to make it to the last three finalists is a huge honor that can help to get an author some much needed publicity.

One of the best known of contemporary children's writers is Jane Yolen. She bases many of her stories in the harsh beauty of the New England landscape. It is often the landscape that serves as an integral part of the story. Parents and children will love to own a copy of the 1988 Caldecott Medal winning Owl Moon. This heart warming story tells of family, its traditions and roots on a bleak but beautiful farm. The elements of nature are also a great asset of this book.

Many of the books have been made into movies. The Polar Express written by Chris Van Allsburg won the Caldecott Medal in 1986 and became an instant classic. Its wonderful storyline is both exciting and heartwarming. It was later made into a highly successful movie that has become a holiday favorite.

John Steinbeck is revered as one of the greatest of American authors. He wrote about social issues that still ring true with readers today. His works include The Red Pony and The Grapes of Wrath. Much of Steinbeck's work focuses on family dynamics and struggles. Many of his main characters are faced with devastating circumstances that are beyond their control. They work hard to keep things as they want them, but life and fate conspire to overwhelm them.

One of the greatest American writers of the past century is John Steinbeck. This prolific writer produced many notable works that are still in demand today. Although the stories may seem dated their message is timeless. The struggles of simple human beings to survive in adverse circumstances rings true today. In 1940 The Grapes of Wrath won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction and Steinbeck some much needed publicity.

One of the most loved books of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This 1961 winner tells the story of racial injustice and tensions in the south, but also of difficult family situations. There are so many threads running through the book that it is difficult to really say which is the main theme.

Lee wrote the book at a time when tensions were already running high and it helped to rally behind the cause. It is the perfect example of how award winning authors have helped to influence history. No one should ever underestimate the power of literature.
