The Jill Kismet Series Primer Night Shift With A Detailed Review

By Cornelia Reyes

The urban fantasy type genre is not all that new with most popular writers. There has typically been a group of authors that can see the many magical possibilities set inside the contemporary world and often try to integrate it with their story telling. The Jill Kismet series books is just such an example of this style with contemporary urban fantasy backgrounds.

Most urban fantasy novels are basically placed in a real world urban type setting that anyone could easily recognize as being like the one they live in. Within this urban world hidden magical components are often incorporated that drive the flow of the story while remaining hidden from average people. Some times the setting requires magic and its various possibilities to be accepted by society. This however, is not the norm for many novels.

The story's plot often revolves around a female protagonist that faces many obstacles while coming to terms with their background and identity. There is often a romantic sub-plot as well that provides an insight to the character's strengths and weaknesses. Many times it ultimately proves to be a central point for the character when deciding what path to take to better understand themselves.

The story Night Shift follows this fundamental formula. It is the primary novel in the new Jill Kismet series of books by writer Lilith Saintcrow. Saintcrow is generally known best for her best selling female bounty hunter novels with Dante Valentine and while they do have some similarities it also has some refreshing differences.

Jill is a new creation that lives in a modern instead of a futuristic world. It is also a much darker world with a much darker subtext involving the active forces of good and evil. There are many monsters and bad guys lurking around the corners that must be dealt with called hellbreed. They pray on the innocent and Jill's task is to protect the innocent and destroy the hellbreed.

To do this she uses the typical assortments of knives, swords and guns that any self respecting demon hunting good guy would have. She also wears light leather armor which protects her from being hurt. Added to these is a demon mark branded on her that she bartered with the top hellbreed in her city for. It adds several superhuman powers to her so she can go and do more than a regular person.

As go deeper inside the book you will realize that Jill is like a female Rambo, though many times her motives are centered around vengeance over justice. This works well with the idea of evil or good and whether or not is is a choice some one can make. Told in the first person, readers should consider this idea as Jill's hidden past is revealed through self-questioning sequences and flashbacks.

Overall Night Shift like most of the Jill Kismet series stories is a fast paced book to read and has more than enough action going on to keep people turning pages. If you are searching for a good book to read, pick it up. For sure, you will not regret it.
