This past week, I was lucky enough to read the novel Some Glad Morning written by Gary C. Horton. Few works of fiction have given me so much satisfaction. I expected it to be a love story. It is, but it's a lot more too, a whole lot more.
Some Glad Morning reminds me of the bestseller Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, but with more heart, more soul. Some Glad Morning has a magical way of touching us down deep.
Ransom MacTavish is the main character of Some Glad Morning. He's a poor innocent when the story opens and immediately captures our heart as we willingly follow him from a dirt poor farm to fight in the First World War. On the battlefield, he comes to possess love letters from a wealthy Charleston Lady. Returning home, Ransom battles monsters of greed and racism as time and again he proves himself worthy.
While Some Glad Morning has a strong love story, it is more, much more. Like a knight's quest for his lady, Ransom is propelled by his heart. His journey is our journey and his courage gives us hope. Mr. Horton has an extraordinary gift for touching us deeply. I'm sure you will find his novel resonates emotionally like few other stories.
Much of Ransom's difficulty is caused by his uncompromising integrity as he battles stupidity, racism, poverty and greed. Ultimately, through Ransom's courage, we are comforted with a heartwarming message of hope.
In the opening scene we are quickly captivated by Horton's sure hand as a storyteller. Few novelists are as gifted. The characters are rendered as vividly as a Technicolor dream. The settings are all highly visual and the scenes spark with an emotional charge. A scene set on the battlefield in France is so heartbreaking it will never leave you. This is the dark place from which Ransom's journey begins.
I found Some Glad Morning reassuring, both for its uncompromising quality and for its hopeful message from a more simple time. Mr. Horton's novel stirred in me many emotions and caused me to reflect on my relationships.
I saw how each one of us is on a journey and we are tested to see if we are strong enough to go the distance for our greatest love. Some Glad Morning is a tremendous story, one I'm sure you will remember for a long time.
